Travel Tip #1 - Work Exchanges

I found out about work exchanges in 2018 when I was in Montreal Canada staying at a hostel for a weekend. I met people from all over the world & they were volunteering and staying there for free? WHAT? Live for freeeee?

A work exchange can be ANYTHING YOU WANT IT TO BE.

one week on th beach in Central America. A year on a farm in Australia. Promoting parties for a few weeks in Thailand at a Hostel. Bar tending in Key West for a season. Being a tour guide in the Philippines. Taking care of some kiddos in Italy.

There are all kinds of way to travel long term for much cheaper than a week long trip cost! It starts with work exchages. Like I mentioned above, they can be really anything you want it to be in term of - there are 1000’s upon 1000’s of opportunities around the world, slap a few filters on there and unleash the possibilities.

Get creative when looking! What’s something you have always wanted to learn? A place you have always wanted to go?

Check out these sites!

Some of the sites require a membership, but you can still browse the opportunities as an unpaid user to see if you can find what you would like to do. :)

Workaway - Workaway is a platform that connects travelers with hosts around the world, allowing them to exchange their skills for accommodation. Travelers can volunteer in various settings, such as hostels, eco-projects, or community initiatives, in exchange for a place to stay and sometimes meals. It’s a great way to experience different cultures and meet new people while traveling on a budget!

Worldpackers - Same concept as workaway, where travelers can connect with hosts around the world to volunteer in exchange for food and accommodation. Hosts can include individuals, families, or organizations that need help with various tasks, such as farming, hospitality, teaching, or community projects. It’s a way for travelers to immerse themselves in local cultures, gain new experiences, and save money while exploring different places.

It’s similar to other work-exchange programs, allowing travelers to help out with various tasks—like farming, gardening, or hospitality—in a wide range of locations. The focus is on creating a community atmosphere, and it often attracts those looking for more personalized experiences while traveling. It's a great way to meet new people and immerse yourself in local cultures!

Australian Work Visa - US Citizens Work and Holiday Visa (subclass 462)

Applicants must be between 18 and 30 years old (or 18-35 for some countries). You can work in any job, but you're limited to working for the same employer for no more than six months. This allows for diverse work experiences. You can enter and leave Australia as many times as you like while the visa is valid.

New Zealand Work Visa - Very similar to Australia’s visa but for 6 Months not 1 year!

These are sites I have used personally to travel with. If you have more questions and what to go deeper, I’d love to help ya :)

Au Pair - It serves as a marketplace where families seeking childcare assistance can find young adults (au pairs) who are interested in living abroad, experiencing a new culture, and providing childcare in exchange for room, board, and a stipend. The website typically features profiles of au pairs, showcasing their backgrounds, interests, and availability, as well as listings from families detailing their needs and preferences. Aupair.com often includes resources and tips for both au pairs and families to help them navigate the process of finding a suitable match.
